The Director – New Business & Special Projects (DNBSP) is a dynamic, all-encompassing role responsible for the design, project management and delivery of existing high-profile client projects, and a commitment to the commercial success and development of the company. The DNBSP will actively seek out new business opportunities from research and initial contact through to site visits, brief development and tendering.

Salary: 40k plus overtime

Based: North London HQ & on-site in UK and overseas as required

Working Hours: Hours of work are an average of 40 hours per week. The role will also require some flexibility to allow for irregular hours, weekends/bank holidays and work on-site.

Aubury & Associates is a family business producing high-quality design and construction for bespoke stands at exhibitions, events and businesses based in the UK and abroad. As well as working with event organisers, we also work directly with galleries and auction houses where our experience in project management, lighting design and installation, bespoke joinery, flooring and picture hanging ensures effective delivery of client projects to the highest standards in the industry.

Working from our North London headquarters, our team of joiners, electricians, textile designers and drapers are specialists in their field. Our wide-ranging experience includes design & production for shell schemes and bespoke stand decoration; access planning; logistics; power generation and distribution; gallery refurbishments; AutoCad and 3D Rendering; lighting design; graphics and signage.

The role

The Director – New Business & Special Projects (DNBSP) is a dynamic, all-encompassing role responsible for the design, project management and delivery of existing high-profile client projects, and a commitment to the commercial success and development of the company. The DNBSP will actively seek out new business opportunities from research and initial contact through to site visits, brief development and tendering.

The role is hands-on, requiring the DNBSP to work closely with clients in realising their vision. Taking charge of project R&D, design development, production of technical drawings for specific bespoke project elements, overseeing the production of project elements in the workshop and onsite management – including team management, client liaison and quality assurance for every project element.

The position is based at our North London HQ and workshops, however, will also require frequent travel to project sites within the UK and overseas. Reporting directly to the Founder of Aubury’s, this is an exciting opportunity to become an integral part of this family business and offers the chance to take ownership of your client lists and grow your role in line with the new business acquired. The DNBSP will work closely on a daily basis with the other Directors, the Special Projects Assistants and wider team to realise projects.

The successful candidate will have an excellent track record in acquiring new clients and demonstrable expertise of managing and delivering complex and ambitious projects.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Working with the founder to form a new business strategy and identify possible new clients
  • Making initial contact, on site meetings, writing bids, tenders and quoting
  • Working with the founder and other directors to ensure all new business is worked into yearly planner and resources allocated effectively

Special Projects

  • Client liaison and project development with specific remit around individual arts and antique dealers and bespoke stands at high-profile art fairs including TEFAF, Photo London and Masterpiece
  • Working with fair organisers and production companies to manage the wider exhibitor build administration for entire fair builds, often in challenging/sensitive venues
  • Project planning & delivery – translating client ideas into reality inc. production drawings & CAD, estimates & quoting
  • Working directly with the Special Project Assistants and Workshop Manager to realise special project elements and bespoke builds
  • Ensure all project details are with the Office Manager for invoicing in a timely manner
  • Manage and oversee onsite activity including staffing, transport, construction and take-down, enforcing RAMS etc.
  • Develop client relationship to ensure happy with project deliverables

Please note this is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities for this role. As a small company, every role will have hands-on, administration and diverse elements including at Director level.

Essential Qualities for Applicants

  • Organised and efficient with excellent time management and ability to multi task/prioritise effectively
  • Experience in customer facing position, working with high-profile clients in highly-pressurised environments
  • Confident, developed sales and negotiation skills, a good relationship builder
  • A natural problem-solver that is keen to help clients make new projects a reality
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Self-motivated and flexible with drive and energy particularly over peak production periods
  • Ability to work and react to tight deadlines, keeping calm under pressure
  • Experience in creating construction drawings and briefing technical teams in how to realise project elements
  • Fantastic attention to detail and high-standards of quality and output
  • A team player with strong people skills and ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Experience in delegating to and developing members of the wider team
  • In line with the ethos of the company, a desire to ‘get stuck in’ and ‘get the job done’
  • Experience of site management, working with diverse teams of skill, expertise and ability
  • Confident in use of internal systems or similar (Word, Excel, Outlook, CAD/AutoCAD)
  • Flexibility in response to business needs
  • Willing and able to work out-of-hours and occasional weekends as required both in the office and onsite

Desirable Qualities

  • Fire regulation, H&S, risk assessment training and qualifications
  • Experience and working knowledge of specific technical skillsets including joinery, lighting design and focusing, etc.
  • Arts market, gallery, exhibition and live events experience
  • Experience of working abroad – particularly with unions in the USA and legislation in mainland Europe
