Role: Workshop Manager

Reports to: Director – Workshop & Special Projects

Responsible for: Workshop Supervisors and permanent/freelance Workshop Staff

Salary: 37.5k plus overtime

Based: North London Workshop & HQ

Working Hours: Hours of work are an average of 40 hours per week. The role will also require some flexibility to allow for irregular hours, weekends/bank holidays and occasional work on-site.

Aubury & Associates is a family business producing high-quality design and construction for bespoke stands at exhibitions, events and businesses based in the UK and abroad. As well as working with event organisers, we also work directly with galleries and auction houses where our experience in project management, lighting design and installation, bespoke joinery, flooring and picture hanging ensures effective delivery of client projects to the highest standards in the industry.

Working from our North London headquarters, our team of joiners, electricians, textile designers and drapers are specialists in their field. Our wide-ranging experience includes design & production for shell schemes and bespoke stand decoration; access planning; logistics; power generation and distribution; gallery refurbishments; AutoCad and 3D Rendering; lighting design; graphics and signage.

The role

The workshop is the heart of all of our projects – from design and product testing through to construction and preparation before individual components travel to site, the workshop is directly involved in almost every aspect of the business. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team, managing day-to-day activities in the workshop and have a key involvement in projects from initial enquiry through to delivery. This is a fast-paced and hands-on role, working closely with all of the directors you will become an integral part of the business, taking ownership of all that the workshop produces and encouraging the team of freelancers and permanent staff to meet their potential and exceed expectation in terms of quality and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management  

  • Overseeing the day-to-day activity within the workshop

  • Working closely with Directors to take project from design through to delivery

  • Reading/translating construction drawings and ensuring that workshop staff build to the correct design and within the agreed timescale

  • Managing the workshop teams and allocating resource to specific projects based on skills and expertise

  • Quality control of individual elements of projects in readiness for delivery to site

  • Work with Director – Development & Exhibitions to book transport for delivery to site

  • Prep load lists and oversee loading of vehicles for each project

  • Manage workshop workflow, planning for future projects while in production for live events and projects

Staff Management

  • Plan staff levels allowing for annual leave & absence as well as arrangements for busy and quiet periods of production to ensure the workflow for jobs is continuous

  • Recruit new staff as and when required. Ensure up-to-date contact list for sub-contractors and temporary staff

  • Approve, control and authorise invoicing and overtime for all workshop staff and ensure all information is with the Office Manager for timely payment in line with company cash flow – managing staff expectation of when they will receive payment

  • Work to develop team members through clear use of best practise in the delivery of jobs, meeting company quality standards and developing skills through training where necessary

Workshop Management

  • Ensure workshop is kept in good order and maintain accurate records for all activity within the workshop

  • Write and update Operations Manual to ensure all H&S and emergency procedure is up-to-date with legislation and amend/implement as and where necessary

  • Report any concerns to the Directors

  • Ensure all staff are fully inducted into the workshop’s H&S and emergency procedure and the team/workshop remains compliant with company guidelines on a daily basis

  • Maintain tools including regular testing and checks as required for each piece of equipment

  • Manage stock control and ordering, ensuring specific supplies are invoiced to the correct project and are available when required

  • Research and source samples as needed

  • Manage relationships with suppliers and sub-contractors to ensure costs and service level are maintained

Essential Qualities for Applicants

  • Experience as a Workshop Manager or experience in a fast-paced workshop environment and demonstrable skills and aptitude to meet the below criteria

  • Organised and efficient with excellent time management and ability to multi task/prioritise effectively

  • Self-motivated and flexible with drive and energy particularly over peak production periods  

  • Ability to work and react to tight deadlines, keeping calm under pressure

  • Experience in creating and reading construction drawings

  • Fantastic attention to detail and high-standards of quality and output

  • A team player with strong people skills

  • Experience of managing diverse teams of skillset, expertise and ability

  • Focused in terms of workload – always looking to improve on current approach and streamlining systems where appropriate

  • Confident in use of internal systems or similar (Word, Excel, Outlook, CAD/AutoCAD, SketchUp, CNC programmers)

  • Flexibility in response to business needs

  • Willing and able to work out-of-hours and occasional weekends as required

Desirable Qualities

  • Fire regulation, H&S, risk assessment, and/or workshop maintenance training and qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of specific workshop skillsets and expertise including joinery, materials and CNC

  • Gallery, exhibition and live event experience including on-site construction and management
